Kieran - 12 years old

Kieran was 12 years old when he came to the attention of the Children's Hearings System for offending and having problems at school. At the root of Kieran's problems was the fact that his mother was abusive towards him. As a result, he was referred to the Children's Reporter on grounds of lack of parental care.

Just as a children's hearing was about to be arranged, Kieran was beaten by his mother in public in front of a number of witnesses. The Social Work Department obtained a Child Protection Order that was continued by the children's hearing.

By now, Kieran was too frightened to even sit in the same room as his mother and a children's hearing made a compulsory supervision order to keep Kieran with foster parents.

From that point on, Kieran stayed out of trouble and as he got older decided that he no longer wanted any contact with his mother. Kieran's life would have been very different without intervention by the Children's Hearings System. His compulsory supervision order was terminated shortly after his 16th birthday.

He had obtained qualifications from school and found a job as an apprentice joiner that he really enjoyed. He told his last hearing that he hoped to start his own business in the future. If you are thinking about joining the Children’s Panel to take the next step. Don’t just think about it – go along to an open evening. It really is hugely rewarding.
