Not sure if panel membership is for you? You can find out more about being a panel member in Orkney by reading the information below. Also have a look at the Become a Children’s Panel member and the Panel member testimonials pages where you can discover what it is like for people like you, who are already children’s panel members and you can hear from young people about the differences that panel members can make to their lives.

BEING A PANEL MEMBER IN ORKNEY

Panel members in Orkney are expected to commit to sit on one hearings session per month. Hearings are scheduled as and when required, take place during normal working hours and usually last a minimum of 90 minutes. You also need to allow time beforehand to prepare thoroughly for hearings. Hearings will be held in the SCRA hearing centre on East Road, Kirkwall KW15 1LX.

You are expected to attend monthly meetings of Orkney panel members. The purpose of the meeting is to support panel members to be knowledgeable and confident enough to sit on hearings. The meeting is at 5.30pm on either the first Monday or Tuesday of the month (meetings are not held during the months of January and August). You also need to be able to take note of and respond appropriately to panel related information you receive by email, letter or text - particularly texts from the Clerk when arranging panel members for a hearing. Additional training opportunities will be offered locally and we would expect panel members to attend where possible.
